Amateur Radio Review of 12x12 Cabin Lodge Bundle

I purchased this tent primarily to use when doing ham radio contesting and rescue. I used another tent when I was sent to North Carolina post Hurricane Helene to act as the rescue group's RTO (Radio Telephone Operator) and froze my butt off. I swore that would never happen again so I began my search and I found Kodiak Canvas.

Purchased the 12 x 12 Cabin Lodge bundle complete with the tent, enclosed awning, and Spruce stove in February 2025. The package arrived about a month later as components were on backordered. This was not a problem as we had a couple of feet of snow on the ground and there was no ham radio contests or need to send me out to a disaster.

Finally, opened up and erected the package minus the stove a couple days before ARRL Field Day event in June and all I have to say is WOW. What a great tent. No loose threads, and the tent went together easily with just me putting it up. Now the enclosed awning/porch assembly was another story. There were no directions that came with that porch. Once I figured out how it went together it was a bear erecting that with just me. With two people it would have ben a snap IF there were directions.

Eventually folks arrived at the location we were doing the contest at and boy o' boy did the tent receive rave reviews. Everybody loved it and had to sit in the covered porch during the four days it was up.

During the contest we received one heavy thunderstorm which lasted about an hour and a half and the tent did not leak one single drop. The next time I will be setting up the tent will be in October for the Pennsylvania QSO Party contest and I plan to install and fire-up the wood stove for that event. Frost is not out of the equation nor quick bouts of snow in October in my part of NE Pennsylvania. I will post a follow-up to this review post that event. I will also write up a review for my site, Unchainedpreppers.com post that event.

Last, I have uploaded a quick picture of the tent Saturday morning surrounded by fog on top of the mountain we were playing radio on.

12x12 bundle

I have been camping for many years now. I have used various types of tents and equipment in that time and, like everyone else, I have developed my own favorites. The Kodiak 12x12 is my new favorite. The quality is impressive and the service from Kodiak Canvas is equally phenomenal. Erecting alone and with some practice and planning it goes up or down in 15/20 minutes. The hardware, wood stove and flue pipe, tarp, and addition are all extremely high quality products designed to last years. 12x12 with 8x8 addition

I have to say I did not purchase this new, I found one used 1 time and purchased it sight on seen. This is a chore to put up, and take down for a few day stay but man o man I absolutely love this tent. It’s going to be my winter home out back in my woods for me this whole winter!! I actually have heated myself out of it a few times in 40 degree weather so I’m excited to see how it is in -24 to -30 get your self one and get out there!!!!

The Best!

I've gone through so many tents in the past 30 years that just cant withstand the weather in the Eastern Sierra. Adding a family into the mix was why we bought this tent 5 years ago. We constantly get questions every trip on how that tent is still standing after 70 mph winds all night. We literally sold our trailer and substituted it for this tent, and I'll never go back. Fits a Discobed bunk, 2 cots, a pack n play, and two 75+lb dogs. I can't say enough great things about this tent. Best purchase we have ever made.

I’ve only heard great things about Kodiak tents and this is gonna spend many a weekend up in the wind River Mountains this summer! Definitely built sturdy with good quality material

Spruce Wood Stove - Addendum to my earlier review

I’d like to offer a follow-up to my “Amateur Radio Review of the 12×12 Cabin Lodge Bundle” from last July. Often, new gear performs well at first, but its true quality only becomes clear over time.

Although I used the tent four times last season, this review focuses on my October setup for the Pennsylvania QSO Party contest. This was the first time I used my Spruce Cylinder stove and - more importantly - the first time my wife joined me for an overnight stay in the tent.

Bottom line: everything worked great. Having my wife there made erecting the tent and the outside vestibule (which we call the “porch”) much easier with an extra set of hands. From start to finish, setup took about 45 minutes.

Once the stove was assembled and installed, we inflated a double-size air mattress. While the mattress filled, we arranged the small amount of furniture we brought and set up the radio equipment for the contest. My wife wasn’t thrilled that there was no carpet, so she drove to a nearby Dollar General and returned with a 7×9-foot area rug for inside the tent and a smaller 3×4-foot rug for the porch entrance.

While she was gone, I raised my antenna - a homebrew G5RV dipole - stacked firewood in the porch area, and got the stove going. The temperature was about 45°F, so heat wasn’t strictly necessary, but it added to the comfort.

During the contest weekend, temperatures ranged from the mid-to-high 40s during the day to the upper 20s in the early morning. We woke to frost each morning - chilly, but not severe. I brought roughly 50 logs of hardwood (mostly ash and oak, with some maple mixed in) for the three-day stay. Running the stove continuously, we used about 36 logs, leaving some to spare. My wife handled most of the stove tending and found it easier to manage than our large wood stove at home.

My only minor observation - though not necessarily a criticism - is that previous pack stoves I’ve used included a chimney damper, which helped regulate burn rate, especially overnight. That might be a useful consideration for future refinement. I have reached out to Kodiak for their thoughts.

My wife, who is not particularly outdoorsy, packed as if we were expecting –10°F temperatures and five-foot snowdrifts. Of course, that never happened, and she used only a fraction of what she brought. More importantly, she had such a great experience that she’s already committed to joining me on future outings - as long as we’re using this tent and stove that is.

Looking ahead, I plan to apply for a Pennsylvania elk permit this coming season. I can guarantee that the Kodiak 12×12 tent, porch, and stove will be part of that hunt.

Awesome Tent!!!

Received the tent and that weekend took it out in a 18” snow storm and performed perfectly. Bought the cover and ground mat for it and everything stayed dry and I stayed warm. This tent is going to last a lifetime.
