Description

Hooray! Finally, a sleeping bag that is both warm AND comfortable. The Z Top™ sleeping bag has a unique top flap that comfortably seals in body heat and eliminates drafts. This revolutionary design allows you to sleep in the position you are most comfortable. You can even sprawl while keeping under the covers. In warmer conditions, you can fold back the top flap, or unzip and remove it.

In Kodiak Canvas fashion, this bag is constructed with premium materials and loaded with features. The top-of-the-line, locking, YKK zippers stay put and won’t travel during the night. Zippers are lined with anti-snag strips and have a full-length zipper baffle to reduce heat loss. Dual layer construction, with offsetting seams minimizes cold spots. A headrest at the top of the bag provides a comfortable area for head and arms. A pillow pocket helps keep a small pillow (not included) in place, or allows one to create a pillow by stuffing a sweatshirt into the space. A tech pocket provides a spot to keep a phone close at hand, inside your bag. The wedge-shaped foot box provides extra space, so toes don’t get scrunched. A zipper at the foot of the bag allows you to vent the bottom when needed. Roll up the bag and secure it with handy compression straps and snap buckles. It is made with a rugged water-resistant canvas shell, and a posh 100% cotton flannel liner. The efficient Factor-4™ insulation is a hollow fiber polyester that is light, fluffy, and very warm. A canvas duffel carry bag is included. Compatible with the Booster Quilt™ accessory (sold separately) that can boost the bag’s temperature rating by up to 30 degrees. Patent pending.

This regular size will comfortably accommodate sleepers up to 6’ tall and 225 lbs.

Z Top Sleep System Temperature Control

When sleeping in the outdoors, you likely are not in a temperature-controlled environment. As the night wears on, temperatures normally drop. You may have been active or had a meal before bed, but as the hours go by, your body can cool down as you lay still. Conversely, you may be a little chilled when you get into your sleeping bag. However, as your body heat warms up your sleeping bag, you may get too warm for comfort. The highly versatile Z Top sleep system (Z Top Sleeping bag with Booster Quilt) allows you to make adjustments so you can maintain a comfortable sleep temperature in most camping conditions. Here are some ways to adjust your sleep temperature:

  1. Fold top flap up to seal body heat, fold it back to cool off.
  2. Open or close the zipper at the foot to vent or seal.
  3. Open side zipper to vent or seal.
  4. Add or remove the Booster Quilt according to conditions.

Temperature Guide

Kodiak Canvas did not invent the universal temperature ratings, and admittedly they are a little confusing. What Z Top sleeping bag temperature rating is best for you? Everyone’s metabolism is different. There could be two people sleeping in the same conditions, and one would be freezing, and the other too warm. You know if you tend to be on the warm side, or the cold side—adjust accordingly. The guide below is helpful in selecting a Z Top sleeping bag with the right temperature rating.

  • Warm Nights (> 70° F): A Booster Quit to cover up may be all you need.
  • Cool Nights (45 to 65°F): +20° Z Top.
  • Cold Nights (30 to 50°F): +20° Z Top with Booster Quilt or 0° Z Top
  • Freezing Cold Nights (-5 to 30°F): +20° Z Top with Booster Quilt, 0° Z Top, or 0° with Booster Quilt.

Best Sleeping Bag on the Market

Guiding full time, you spend a lot of nights living in a tent. Just this last season, I spent over 90 days in my Z-Top. I almost prefer it over my bed at home! Easily the warmest, most comfortable, and highest quality old school sleeping bag you can by. And the z-top keeps you warm where other bags won’t.

20 degree XLT Z Top

This is without a doubt the best sleeping bag I have ever owned. I wish it also came in a backpacking model. Regardless, it's everything they said it would be and more. I'm 5-11, and 200 pounds. I chose the XLT for the extra girth and length. I move around a lot while sleeping so the XLT offers that extra room. I chose the 20-degree bag even though I camp in high elevations with snow. Think, Colorado Rocky's, 10,000 plus feet. I also bought the XLT Booster Quilt to go with it. Yes, it cost a little more than if I had just gone with the 0-degree bag; but there's logic to my madness. Nothing is worse than waking up in the middle of the night full of sweat because your bag is too warm. Better to have a cooler bag so you can camp in warmer climates and have an extra blanket if you need it in colder climates. The clips on the booster quilt attach to the eyelets on the bag which keep it from falling off during the night. As a bonus, the booster quilt offers another 30 degrees, meaning, if I need it, I'll be good to about -10 degrees€”better than the 0-degree bag. Plus, I usually have my buddy heater going, which in a 10X10 canvas tent keeps the interior temp at a warm 55-ish degrees when it's 20-ish outside. The only thing I wish is that Kodiak would someday make a bag just like this one, but for backpacking. I have a good mummy bag that I've tested down to 20 degrees lying on the ground. Of course, I was on my thermarest mattress and within a bivy sack. But it kept me good and warm all night. Problem is, I just hate mummy bags because of all my moving around. If Kodiak could make one of these into a lightweight bag that rolls up tight for backpacking, well then, we'd have us a masterpiece.

The BEST

This is hands down the best sleeping bag I've owned, and I've had quite a few over the years. The innovative design of the Z top solves the worst issue with sleeping bags. I've slept under the stars and in the wind without being chilled to the toes. I'm a big guy and the sizing of the XL bag serves me well. I wish it was a wee bit wider, as that's my only inkling of a critique. The zipper stays where you leave it. The carrying bag is the wrapping to the awesomeness that is the Kodiak sleeping bag! Get you one today!

Booster Quilt - XLT & 0°F XLT Z Top Rectangle Sleeping Bag

I live completely off grid. It has already dropped down into the 20's since my purchase.
I haven't yet needed to crawl inside the sleeping bag, I have only needed to cover up with the quilt. It's so amazing and I am super happy with this purchase. I have also used it on my last overlanding camp and it fit inside my one man+ dog tent. Actually with the heavy winds and rain the set up made the platform a bit more stable.
I love it - I'd buy it again !!!
